The Chinese province of Yunnan is a marvellous country of its own. With an area the size of France it offers more variety than any other place in China. Its landscape ranges from tropical rainforest in the south to snowcapped mountains in the north. In China people also refer to this province as the country of everlasting spring. Due to an average altitude of 2000 m in the subtropical zone, Yunnan has an almost year-round moderate climate. Yunnan, formerly called Nanzhao, has a history of more than 1000 years still visible in the old city centres of Zhongdian, Dali and Lijiang. The rugged mountainous terrain also preserves much of the local traditions among the minorities, many of them still wearing their traditional dress and using their own languages. The route plan we follow shows you all the aspects of Yunnan in a nutshell offering you a remarkable variety of nature, culture and typical South China countryside. Nowhere the trip is too demanding nor in anyway boring. Having joined us on one of our Yunnan cycletrips you will easily understand why we made our base right here.
