Myanmar (Birma)

Country of temples and rivers

Myanmar brings you right back into the old days. As if you were stepping into a photo of colonial days. Despite the current regime, no country in Asia has so much appeal to your romantic imagination than former Burma. Myanmar is also referred to as the country of a thousand temples: one look over the Bagan temple plain shows you more than you can count. Myanmar in fact is a lovely country to cycle. The roads are in comparatively good condition and the countryside still breathes the old days' tranquility. From Yangon with the world famous Shwedagon pagoda, you will first cycle through the south, starting from lazy Moulmein. The second part of your journey brings you into the heart of the country. For about a week we follow the banks of the River Irrawaddy. This is the cradle of Burmese culture. Bagan is a World Heritage Site and Mandalay also has a lot to offer. Cycling through Myanmar also means encountering the Burmese, a charming people who sincerely welcome you to their country.
