Travel on the Silkroad

History, deserts, boeddhism

The Silkroad has the history of the longest trade route on earth, connecting East and West for more than 1000 years. Not only silk was traded, hence the name, but Buddhism and Islam also came with the traders to the Far East. The Silkroad created flourishing trade cities of great splendour that had an almost magical image in the West. It drew explorers like Marco Polo who travelled this route to China in the 13th century. This journey starts in Uzbekistan, and leads you through Kyrgystan through the Taklamakan and the Gobi Deserts to east China. It offers you an intensive encounter with the history of the Silkroad and the culture of Central Asia. Highlights on the way are cities like Buchara and Samarkand in Uzbekistan, which still preserve many of the ancient buildings and city layouts from those days. Also gripping your fantasy are the ruins of abandoned cities in the Taklamakan Desert. Highly rewarding is a visit to the Mogao grottoes in Dunhuang where you can see how particular and elegant Buddhist art was in those days. Your journey will eventually finish in the Chinese cities of Xi’an and Beijing.
