The quest for Shangri La

Shangri La, the mythical place described in the book by James Hilton, "Lost Horizon", has become a synonym for the impressive landscapes and authentic culture the Himalayan region has still to offer us. The south-western province of Yunnan, China, is situated at the eastern end of the Himalayan mountain range and might have inspired Hilton. The landscape is varied with mountains, gorges and blue lakes. Apart from the historical places of Dali and Lijiang, we'll take you along lesser-known routes in the region which we know very well from our own experience. From Yunnan you fly directly to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. You will not need to acclimatise having already spent time at higher elevations. After seeing the highlights of Lhasa, your overland journey to Nepal will start. After visiting the fairly authentic places of Gyantse, Xigatse, and Xegar, you reach the final highlight of your trip: a visit to the monastery Rongbuk, perfectly located at the foot of the world's highest mountain, Mount Everest. Your journey eventually ends in Kathmandu, Nepal.
