Northern India

Slowly down the Ganges

Whoever wants to meet India in all its varieties is advised to follow the course of the holy River Ganges, cradle of Indian culture. The river has its source in the Himalayas and plays an important role in the religious world of the Indian people. Varanasi (formerly Benares) with its extensive cremation rituals, shows you all of that. The river also runs through the part of India where the Hidoeistic cultural style became blended with the Islamic cultural style, creating the magnificent architecture of the Moguls. Palaces and fortresses in Agra, Jaipur and Gwalior show you the finest examples, among them of course the world famous Taj Mahal. But India has more to offer, even very surprising aspects. This journey will also take you to the remote state of Orissa, where you'll meet old tribes living in a strictly traditional way, still using their own language and clothing. And, of course, on the way you see real Indian daily life in all its variety, for some a confrontation, for others an enriching experience.
